A Study on the Physical Growth and Health Status of Young Adults in a Rural Area


Abstract
For the purpose of ascertaining the status of physical growth and health of the young adults in a rural area, the author reviewed and analyzed the results of the draft physical examination towards a total of 1,315 persons in Poryong Gun, Chungchongnam Do. In this study, only those who had the examination for the first time were included, and those aged 22 and over were excluded because they were few. The examination was conducted during May 1970. Followings are the findings of this study.
1. Of all the persons studied, 44. 0% were 19 years old, 48. 8% 20 years old and 7.2% 21 years old. 2. Of all persons, no education or primary school, junior high school, senior high school and university or college educational groups constituted 49. 2%, 20.2%, 23. 7% and 6. 9% respectively.
3. Farm households occupied more than 70% of all in the study area. Y
4. The mean of body height was 165.61cm. No significant difference was found by age, but it was observed that the more educated persons were the taller.
5. The mean of body weight was 57.77kg. By age and educational background, 21 year old group and university or college education group were the lightest with 56. 51kg and 57.17kg respectively.
6. Basing on the measurements of height and weight, several physical indices were calculated as follows; Relative weight 34. 88, ROhrer index 1. 27, and Kaup index 2. 11.
7. Of all the persons. examined, those who had systolic pressure of 160mmHg or higher and 140-160 were 1. 4% and 5. 8% respectively.
8. Those who had diastolic pressure of 95mmHg or higher and 90-95 were 1. 6% and 4.0% of all respectively.
9. Those who had both systolic and diastolic pressure of 160mmHg or higher/95mmHg or higher, 140160/90-95 and 140 or higher/q0 or higher were 1. 0%, 2.0 and 3. 7% of all respectively.
10. Those who had either systolic, diastolic or both systolic and diastolic pressure of 160mmHg/9 mm Ilg or higher and 140-160/90-95 were 2. 1% and 7. 0% of all respectively.
11. The prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis was 1. 67%.
12. The prevalence of chronic purulent otitis media was 2.13%.
13. Out of all 1,315 persons, 3 cases of cataract, 3 cases of leukoma, and 1 case of optic nervy ,trop!,; were found, and also I case of bilateral blindness and 4 cases of unilateral blindness were foul, Besides, there were 41 cases (3.12%) of color blindness.
14. There were 3cases of mental deficiency, 2 cases of schizophrenia and 2cases of epilesy of all 1,315 persons.
15. Those who had shortening of one of lower extremities were 0. 84% and other defects of lower extremities 0. 68% of all the persons examined.
16. Those who had missing of one or more fingers were 0. 68% and other defects of upper extremities 0. 61% of all the persons examined.
